Miniature Gardens & Magic Crayons
During the GDC this year, I ran into the creator of those prototypes Will Wright showed off a couple years ago that I loved so much, Chaim Gingold. This year, Chaim gave a quick talk during the Experimental Gameplay workshop about Lightweight Prototyping, something he does a lot of at Maxis. Tonight I stumbled upon his website, which has a few goodies, but I think the most valuable resource available is his masters thesis, Miniature Gardens & Magic Crayons: Games, Spaces, & Worlds.
There isn’t a whole lot I could say that hasn’t already been said by Andrew Stern on Grand Text Auto way back in 2003. I haven’t read the entire 123 page thesis yet, but it’s definitely going on my list of things to do. This is the sort of thing that makes me want to go take on a school like that.
